Lesson 2 of 5

Responsibilities

People are expected to obey the law, respect other people’s rights and opinions, and treat people fairly. Everyday responsibilities include caring for yourself and your family, looking after your neighbourhood, and protecting the environment.

The lesson

Everyday responsibilities include obeying the law, respecting other people’s rights and opinions, and treating people fairly. Respect does not require agreement; it means recognising that others are entitled to their own views and fair treatment.

Responsibilities also reach beyond individual conduct. People are expected to care for themselves and their families, look after their local area, and take care of the environment. These ideas connect civic responsibility with ordinary choices at home and in the neighbourhood.

More on this topic

Looking after the local area can mean disposing of rubbish properly, recycling where facilities are available, respecting shared spaces, and supporting community activities. Respecting other people includes accepting their legal rights to express opinions and practise a religion or no religion.

Responsibilities and rights work together: people can expect fair treatment while also treating others fairly. Disagreement is permitted; intimidation, unlawful discrimination, and violence are not justified by disagreement.
