The lesson
Rights include freedom of belief and religion, freedom of speech, protection from unfair discrimination, and the right to a fair trial. These protections allow people to hold and express different views while relying on fair treatment under the law.
Rights sit alongside responsibilities: exercising a freedom does not remove the need to respect other people’s rights or obey the law. Democracy also gives people a part in choosing the government.
Freedom of speech allows people to express opinions and criticise government, within legal limits. Freedom of belief includes changing religion or choosing not to follow a religion. Protection from discrimination concerns unfair treatment based on protected characteristics.
The right to a fair trial means that allegations must be dealt with through a lawful process. A person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proved guilty. Police investigate allegations; courts determine guilt and sentence those convicted.
